About Me

My name is Ricky and I am a mechanical engineer by training, but an artist by nature. My life's ambition is to merge my two passions to create meaningful change socially, academically, and environmentally.

From my observations, an engineer's job is to look down at the paper to figure out the details. Meanwhile, an artist's job is to look up at the world around them and communicate what they see through their art. As a student of both disciplines, I apply both perspectives in my work.

Take a look at my work below . . .

Art

Engineering makes me highly analytical while drawing. I closely study techniques to direct the audience's attention within each artwork. In doing so, I can maximize the impact of my message by conducting the emotional response of the audience.

I aim to explore the nuances of the shared human experience through my art. What do you see? How does it differ from what I see? Why is it different?

The world is colored by our experience of it. Therefore, no two people see the world the same way.

The world is colored by context.

Engineering

Art leads me to always look for a different angle when approaching an engineering problem. Engineers tend to exist in a dualistic framework, where every problem has a right and wrong answer. But in my practice, I have found design is always relativistic. There is never one solution to a problem and there is always more than one way to reach that solution.

Directing my curiosity towards every subject means I always discover new questions to answer. What if the RC car could fly? Can you 3D print a silicone muscle? What's the optimal way to cook a turkey?

There is only one way to find out. That is to try, fail, and try again.

Trying is The only way to find out.

Tipsy the multimodal search and rescue drone. Designed to traverse precarious environments.

Design

Ideas are created when two thoughts intersect. Jazz was created at the intersection of European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. Japanese bullet trains were designed by a birdwatching engineer...

Engineering blends into my art and vice versa. It is in the mixture of the two that I find new ideas are created and new solutions are found.

The lines in between are always blurry, but it is there that something new emerges.

THe lines between are always blurry.
